About Us

In Backyard is a home and garden site about making the most of the space outside your door. Since 2020 we have published guides and idea collections on gardening, plants, backyard projects, outdoor living and the animals that share our yards.

What we cover

• Gardens and plants: what to grow, when to plant it and how to keep it healthy, from perennials and container gardens to winter gardens and herbs.

• Backyard projects: fences, ponds, patios, swings, trellises and other builds you can take on yourself.

• Animals and pests: humane ways to deal with uninvited visitors such as ants, bats, chipmunks and stray dogs, and how to attract the ones you do want, like fireflies and dragonflies.

• Outdoor living: ideas for spending more time outside, alone or with the whole family.

How we write

Every article names the writer behind it, and each writer's page lists what else they have written. We explain what makes an idea work in a real yard — the materials, the cost of effort and the trade-offs — rather than just showing a picture of it.

When we find a mistake, or a reader points one out, we correct the article.
